Because it is harvested in the fall, many wild rice recipes are associated with the holiday season. Wild rice stuffing and dressing recipes abound, but there are also wonderful soups featuring wild rice as well as appetizers and breads.

We've chosen a few of our favorite wild rice recipes to feature here. Try them out with the Thanksgiving turkey or make them in January, just because. You'll be glad you did.

The Mitsitam Cafe Cookbook: Recipes from the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian is a wonderful resource not only for wild rice recipes but also a wide range of recipes for other edible native plants.

Featuring some of the best recipes from the Smithsonian's popular and critically acclaimed Mitsitam Cafe at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC, the cookbook highlights tribal culinary traditions from the five regions of North America — Northern Woodlands, Great Plains, North Pacific Coast, Mesoamerica, and South America. The cookbook lets you explore food you might find in your garden or backyard any time of the year.

However, if you are specifically looking for a wild rice recipe to compliment the Thanksgiving or Christmas turkey, I highly recommend the Wild Rice Salad with Apple Cider Vinaigrette. For this easy salad Chef Richard Hetzler has combined wild rice with carrots, cranberries, tomatoes, scallions and a variety of seeds on a bed of watercress drizzled with a homemade, sweet tangy apple cider vinaigrette. It's highly likely that you'll need to double the recipe if you want leftovers.

Other featured recipes include:

  • Corn and Tomato Stew
  • Squash Blossom Soup
  • Pulled Buffalo Sandwich with Chayote Slaw
  • Cedar-Planked, Fire-Roasted Salmon
  • Cranberry Crumble

Wild Rice Dressing

Brown & Wild Rice Walnut Dressing by the Minnesota Cultivated Wild Rice Council.
This easy to make dressing takes a bit of advance preparation because it calls for both the brown and wild rices to be cooked before starting the dressing. Boil the rice the night before or make the entire dish in advance and have one less thing to do on the holiday.

Wild Rice Stuffing

Wild Rice Apricot Stuffing by the Minnesota Cultivated Wild Rice Council

This amazing combination of sausage, wild rice, apricots and herbs will be a fantastic accompaniment for your Thanksgiving or Christmas turkey. Preparing most of the ingredients the night before, and reserving the broth and egg to add just before cooking, will save time when you're stuffing the bird.
